“Education which stops with efficiency may prove the greatest menace to society,” wrote Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1947. “The most dangerous criminal may be the man gifted with reason, but with no morals.”

In recent decades, research has lent support to his argument. With our new scientific understanding of the social, emotional, and ethical development of students, I think we can safely say that academic achievement alone no longer counts as a “successful” education.
